It’s been a while since we heard from Andy Rubin, co-creator of Android (the most widely used smartphone operating system in the world) since he left Google in 2014. Along with Steve Jobs, one can argue that Andy Rubin helped shape the modern smartphone industry. And now he wants to make another mark.

Before Google ever pushes out a major update to any of its applications, the company sends a ‘dogfood’ build of the app to their internal beta testers to get their feedback on new features, designs, or anything else. It appears that Google is currently beta testing a brand new Play Store update that revamps the ‘My Apps’ section.

The images below, given to Android Police by a tipster, show a visual and a feature-rich redesign of the My Apps section.

Blackberry Will Release Only Android Smartphones In 2016, CEO Says

BlackBerry has no immediate plans to release a new BlackBerry 10-powered smartphone this year.

Report: Blackberry Gonna Release All New Android Based SmartPhones In 2016

When Google announced official support for fingerprint readers in Android 6.0 Marshmallow, we knew that fingerprint authentication use would be much more expansive than it was on iOS at launch, including third-party support. But, now it has been confirmed that users can authenticate Google Play Store purchases with their fingerprints on Marshmallow.

The support for fingerprint authorization comes as a part of the new Play Store that is now rolling out with the snazzy redesign, but for whatever reason, Google doesn't have the option turned on by default on devices that have fingerprint scanners. If you have a device with a fingerprint scanner that is running Android 6.0 (which right now means you have a Nexus 5X or a review unit 6P), you'll have to dig into the Play Store Settings and look under User Controls in order to turn on fingerprint authentication.

This should prove to make authorizing purchases in the Play Store much easier, but of course that also comes with the downside of potentially spending a lot more money in the Play Store than you might want. If you're worried about your spending habits, you may want to leave on the password entry, so that while you're typing in your password you can have a quiet moment to reflect on if you really need whatever it is you're buying.

Now You Can Access Google Play Store With Your Fingerprint To Purchase

It’s no secret that BlackBerry is developing its own Android-powered smartphone. Thanks to numerous renders, images and leaked specifications.

Another set of live photos showcasing the unannounced BlackBerry Venice made the rounds online. The high-end Android smartphone is expected to launch at some point in November on all major carriers in the United States.

The latest batch of images falls right in line with past leaks. It confirms that BlackBerry Venice features slide-out QWERTY keyboard, slightly curved display, and main camera with dual-LED flash.

On the software side, the device appears to boot a mostly stock version of Android. BlackBerry has reportedly added a number of productivity-centric goodies, including hardware keyboard shortcuts, as well as easy access to composing emails and messages.

Hardware-wise, the BlackBerry Venice is once again rumored to pack a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 chipset, coupled with 3GB of RAM. The device’s camera is expected to be an 18MP unit with dual-LED flash.

The next big Android update could make it much easier to spot missed voicemail.
IMAGE: FLICKR, YURI SAMOILOV
Android M, Google's newly announced but not yet publicly released mobile operating system, will reportedly carry visual voicemail in its built-in dialer app, according to an Android issue tracker thread for developers first spotted by tech website Android Police. Like on an iPhone, this would allow users to navigate a list of missed and saved voicemails, so it would be much easier to see who has recently been in touch.
Although visual voicemail would be a small addition, it would wipe away a slight annoyance: For years, Android users have sought third-party solutions for visual voicemail, typically apps made by carriers such as AT&T themselves. Now users won't have to install extra software.

However, if Google made this available, it would still be up to individual carriers to support the feature. As of now, visual voicemail is only being supported by Orange in France, but it was recently announced that T-Mobile will offer it in the U.S. after Android M is released in the fall. Since the new operating system is in beta, more carriers are expected to support it down the road. All major U.S. carriers support visual voicemail on the iPhone, which has had the feature ever since its first model in 2007.
Visual voicemail will be joined by major systemwide improvements and other new features in Android M. Android Pay will enable contactless payments using fingerprint sensors for authentication (similar to Apple Pay). Google is also promising better battery life, and better control over what system features apps can access.
But Android M's candy-themed official title? That we don't know yet. Muffin? M&Ms? Marshmallow?

Several photos of an alleged Samsung Galaxy S6 edge+ dummy made the rounds online. The handset is posing alongside Samsung Galaxy Note 4, thus allowing us to catch a good glimpse of its proportions.

The device in the photos falls right in line with the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge+ renders we exclusively showed you this week. Design-wise, the upcoming phablet will look exactly like a slightly stretched Samsung Galaxy S6 edge.

Rumored specs of Samsung Galaxy S6 edge+ include Exynos 7422 or Snapdragon 808 chipset, 5.7” QHD display, 16MP main camera, and 5MP front-facing unit. The high-end device is expected to debut on August 12 alongside Samsung Galaxy Note 5.

Facebook has continually sought to separate its Messenger app from the rest of the social networking experience. This began a few years ago with the introduction of the standalone Messenger app, which has since been the subject of many feature updates and enhancements. Among them was the recent addition of free video calling, which, when rolled out back in late April, was limited to 18 countries. Today, though, most of the gaps have been filled, with Facebook's VP of messaging products sharing that video chat is now a global thing, aside from "a few exceptions,"

The IM game is a crowded market occupied by a series of different brands and services. In much of Asia, the likes of WeChat and Viber dominate proceedings, but Apple's iMessage, Microsoft's Skype, Facebook Messenger and, of course, the Facebook-owned WhatsApp, also command a large share of the spoils.

Indeed, this move to add free calling to Messenger's repertoire seems a thinly-veiled attempt to court users of products like Skype. Since the Facebook network commands an active user base well in excess of one billion -- 600 million of whom apparently use Messenger -- the Windows maker may well look over its shoulder at what Mark Zuckerberg and his Menlo Park firm have plotted here.

The iOS and Android apps are both compatible with video calling, along with the Web version. The first run of the new video chat feature covered a number of nations including the U.S., Canada, France and the U.K., but as per an update from Facebook's messaging products chief David Marcus, virtually everybody should now be able to join in:

We're happy to share we've now rolled out the capability globally, with the exception of a few countries we're still working on improving quality for. So make sure you get the latest and greatest version for iOS and Android, give it a try, and as always... tell us how we can make it even better for you!
According to comments made to the above post on Marcus' page, those in Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain may still not yet be able to utilize this feature, and there may be other exceptions besides.

The latest versions of Messenger for Android and iOS are supplied below, so check the feature out if you haven't already, and let us know what you think of the video calling feature via the comments.

More live images of the Sony Xperia Z4 show up, no surprises

The Sony Xperia Z4 can't come fast enough for fans of the brand and undecided smartphone aficionados alike. Judging by the smartphone's recent visits to the rumor mill, the flagship is drawing near.

The press renders that made the rounds before, have taken up live form. The speakers are housed behind thin slits at the edges of the devices, and the front camera and notification LED are where expected.
The glass back also sports your typical Xperia design language with a modest Sony logo positioned in the center and the 20.7MP camera atop an LED flash. What will please the general public is the omission of the flap, which covered the USB port in previous Xperias. The IP68 certification for dust and water protection is retained, though.

This batch of images is accompanied by alleged specs, which claim that, indeed, the Xperia Z4 will come with two resolutions on its 5.2-inch screen - either FullHD or QHD. The Snapdragon 810 will power the smartphone, joined by 4GB of RAM, when the previous consesus was on 3GB. The front camera will be a 5MP unit.
The Xperia Z4 will boot Android Lollipop out of the box, as if you could have expected anything else from a major launch in 2015. When that launch will take place however, remains a mystery for now.

WhatsApp finally adds voice calls for all Android users, iOS coming soon

Android users can finally make voice calls on WhatsApp, thanks to a quiet but major update. The feature has been teased for months, with the update hitting select users a few weeks ago. Now, however, it seems it's available to all, with the latest version of WhatsApp offering a new, cleaner layout, with three tabs for Calls, Chats, and Contacts. As you'd expect, you simply click the Calls tab and select a contact to chart talking.

Although the update has yet to be confirmed from the company itself, the update is available either from the Google Play Store or WhatsApp's own site. Be patient, however, it seem the roll-out is a bit patchy — not everyone is finding the update available for them. Voice calling for the app should also be coming to iOS in the near future, with WhatsApp cofounder Brian Acton commenting at F8 that the feature will be arriving on Apple devices in a "couple weeks." It should also be noted that these are app-to-app voice calls, unlike previous version of WhatsApp which have allowed users to call contacts by simply switching to their smartphone's regular mobile services.

New renders of the HTC One M9+ are leaked

Alleged press renders of the upcoming HTC One M9+ made the rounds on Twitter, courtesy of @upleaks. The high-end smartphone is going to make its official debut next month, on April 8 in Beijing.

Shortly thereafter, @upleaks posted a closeup shot of the area below the display of the smartphone. A homescreen button which is likely a home to a fingerprint sensor splits the BoomSound speaker of the device.
The circular camera of the handset should hardly catch anyone by surprise. It has already appeared in live photos.
HTC One M9 Plus might debut with two different chipsets - a MediaTek MT6795 model could cater to the Chinese market, while a Snapdragon 810 version will be sold elsewhere. The rest of the device’s rumored specs include 5.2” QHD display, fingerprint scanner, 3GB of RAM, and 32GB of expandable memory.
